TVDE exam questions: practice with the official IMT bank
Practise with the official IMT question bank, organised into 30-question tests just like the real exam, with the original images and a pass mark of 27. There is also a test on the revision of the law passed in July 2026.
Official questions, our marking
The official tests use the question bank published by the IMT for the TVDE driver exam. The answer key and explanations are the responsibility of this site, and this simulator does not replace the exam taken at the IMT. The test on the new law is our own educational tool.
Choose your test
The official tests are in Portuguese because the IMT exam is taken in Portuguese, so practising in Portuguese is preparation for the real exam. No question repeats between the official tests.

What the TVDE exam at the IMT is like
The TVDE driver certification exam is taken at an IMT office, in digital format and in Portuguese. There are 30 multiple-choice questions and you need at least 27 correct answers, which means only three mistakes are allowed. Before the exam you must complete the road training course, with a minimum duration of 50 hours, at a certified centre. Without a pass there is no TVDE driver certificate (CMTVDE) and you cannot work on the platforms.
What comes up in the exam
The questions come from an official bank published by the IMT, divided by area. These are the topics and the number of questions each one has in the bank, which gives a good idea of the weight of each subject in the exam:
- Emergency situations and first aid: 54 questions
- Driving techniques: 45 questions
- Overtaking: 40 questions
- Regulation of the activity: 34 questions
- Road signs: 32 questions
- Communication and interpersonal relations: 30 questions
- Driving in roundabouts: 27 questions
- Speed: 26 questions
- Giving way: 26 questions
Note that more than half the questions are about driving and the highway code (overtaking, roundabouts, speed, road signs, giving way and driving techniques) and that first aid is the area with the most questions of all. The specific regulation of the activity is where the revision of the law approved in 2026 comes in.
How to study and pass first time
The most effective approach is to take full tests, just like the real exam, and always review the questions you got wrong instead of moving on. Do one test a day, look at the list of wrong answers with the correct one at the end, and repeat the same test two days later to confirm you have retained it. When you are scoring 28 or 29 across several tests in a row, you are ready. Pay special attention to the questions with images, because they require interpreting real signs and traffic situations, and they are often where candidates lose points.

The initial training course, with a minimum duration of 50 hours, is given by certified centres and the price varies from centre to centre; there is no amount set in the law. Check the costs with centres certified by the IMT.
What happens if I fail the exam?
Without a pass, the TVDE driver certificate is not issued and you cannot work in the activity. You can retake the exam, so it is worth reviewing the areas where you went wrong before trying again.
